Recommended. The Vectra is now better than ever and gives the class-leading Ford Mondeo a run for its money. Its image problem might take longer to rectify.

The Vauxhall Vectra and Ford Mondeo are locked in a head-to-head battle for the title of King of the Motorway Fast Lane. The latest offering from Vauxhall narrows the gap but the Vectra still doesn't offer much in the way of driver experience. Despite some sparkling chrome trim and beefy looks, this roomy family car lacks character. Inside, there's bags of space and an air of quality lacking from the previous version; equipment levels are high and there are dozens of versions to choose from, including a dual-fuel LPG-petrol model. However, the Vectra is unlikely to hold its value in the secondhand market.
Positive Punkte
- Very comfortable and spacious; good equipment
- A quality offering that's better finished than old Vectra
- Competitive used prices and running costs
|
Negative Punkte
- Not as sharply styled or as good to drive as Mondeo
- Depreciates heavily
- Ford, Peugeot, Renault and VW do diesels better
